Frequently Asked Questions

  • Athletes, performers, and leaders face pressures that can cause stress, self-doubt, burnout, or loss of focus. Certified Mental Performance Consultants® (CMPCs) help individuals strengthen their inner edge by teaching evidence-based mental skills such as goal-setting, confidence building, focus, and stress management. The goal is not only improved performance, but also increased well-being, resilience, and enjoyment of sport.

  • CMPCs specialize in mental performance—the psychological side of training and competition. Unlike coaches who focus on physical skill or therapists who address clinical concerns, CMPCs bridge the gap between wellness and performance. They teach tools that optimize confidence, attention, motivation, and emotional regulation to enhance outcomes across sport, performing arts, military, and business settings.

  • Common concerns include:

    • Managing performance anxiety or excessive pressure

    • Rebuilding confidence after injury or setback

    • Restoring motivation following burnout

    • Improving concentration and “flow” under pressure

    • Reframing unhelpful thought patterns into positive self-talk

    • Enhancing consistency and enjoyment in sportyouth_sport_and_cmpc_certificat…

These are addressed through personalized mental-skills training to help athletes perform at their best, both physically and mentally.

  • CMPC-informed sessions begin with an assessment of goals and current challenges, followed by education and training in mental skills such as visualization, focus routines, mindfulness, and emotional regulation. Athletes then apply these techniques in practice and competition, with continued reflection and refinement for sustainable improvement.

  • All performers can benefit—not just elite athletes. CMPCs work with youth, collegiate, professional, and recreational athletes, as well as performing artists, tactical professionals, and executives. The shared goal is helping individuals thrive under pressure and translate mental performance strategies into life beyond sport.

  • Results depend on individual engagement, frequency of practice, and readiness to apply skills outside of sessions. Many athletes report improved confidence, focus, and emotional balance within a few weeks, with long-term gains coming from consistent application and collaboration with coaches or teams.

  • Yes. CMPCs adhere to strict professional and ethical standards established by the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). Client privacy, informed consent, and scope of practice are upheld in every session, ensuring a safe and professional environment for growth.

  • The CMPC credential is the only nationally accredited certification for mental performance professionals in the U.S. and Canada. CMPCs complete advanced graduate training, supervised experience, and an ethics-based exam, followed by continuing education. This ensures every client receives support grounded in science, ethics, and practical expertise.
